It was fun, but was also so we can tell you that the Audioengine D1 is the DAC amp to get. We’ve read a lot of reviews, talked to a load of tech aficionados, and spent ages picking out the tiny differences between DAC amps.
HOW TO CONNECT IPOD TO AUDIOENGINE D1 DAC HOW TO
The vinyl side of the equation seems easy compared to how to build out the digital side.Last Updated on The iPod Classic has a ton of drawbacks, but it is fairly simple to setup and use with my speakers. Id assume some sort of media server could bypass this and I could either transfer my music to it, or connect it via USB, but my concern with that is the interface and ease of use. (Meaning id likely have well over a TB if it was all lossless, and that would add a whole different level of complexity im sure) I'm making an effort to focus on lossless only, but thats going to be a long process, as I have about 100gb of music, of which about 90% isn't lossless. A lot of my source files are in the 256-320k bit range. This why I considered just adding a DAC of some sort into the equation to at least give that playback as much quality as possible. Thats probably not the best setup, but its pretty simple and straightforward. I have my music on several external drives, but generally dump the majority of music I am listening to on my iPod Classic, which I can then direct connect to my A2/5's. I was hoping to avoid a computer entirely.
HOW TO CONNECT IPOD TO AUDIOENGINE D1 DAC UPGRADE
I’m really trying to keep the setup simple, and semi-affordable, while not locking me in with a setup or equipment that would require major overhaul down the line if/when I need to upgrade or expand. I’m sure many of you have similar needs, any advice is appreciated, and I would love to know what solutions you have implemented. This again may be solving problems I don’t have, but that may scale better long term is I plan to add other sources or get non powered speakers. Also as for the DAC component, I’m wondering if I should buy another small DAC like the AE D1 for home use, or whether I should by a DAC rack, perhaps one in an Integrated Amp. So I started looking at the FIIO X3-5, but I kind of hate having to buy another player and storage. I have some lossless files, but I hat converting them to Apples formatting. That’s lossy as most of my files are between 256-320k.

From a basic standpoint I can use what I have, iPod Classic to A2/5s.

And here is where I’m somewhat unclear how to proceed. As for the digital music part of the equation, since I don't need an amp or receiver, I'm assuming another DAC of some sort, and perhaps a lossless DAP is in order. Any thoughts between the two? I seem fairly good to go once I have the turntable as the A2's and A5's are powered speakers. The only other turntable I see sub $500 that gets a lot of recommendations is the Pro-Ject Carbon. (I use the term loosely knowing lossless is the way to go) So for turntable, from what I have read, best entry level turntable is the Rega P1. My goal is to have two sources, vinyl and mp3. What I currently have is a pair of AudioEngine A2's and A5's, and an iPod Classic. As for Sennheisers I'm torn between going with something like an entry level HD550 or just cutting to the chase and paying for the HD600's.Īs for home. I'm not a huge on-ear fan so I crossed out Grado's. I was originally hoping to keep it sub $200, so I was looking at some base model Grado's and Sennheisers.

In terms of headphones I'm pretty a newb extreme here. Anyone with some advice here is appreciated. (Odd i know) I also looked at the HIFIMan EF2 because I like the idea of going to tube, but I've read differing opinions on it, and the build quality seems suspect on some level. (I also own other AE equipment) I've look at the FIIO Alpen but I cant quite pinpoint my lack of enthusiasm for it. My amp/dac searching keeps leading back to the AudioEngine D1 because it seems great value and gets pretty favorable reviews. One, a basic headphone amp/dac and secondly, a good pair of headphones. I think I've got the work setup pretty dialed in terms of what I need.

Diving back in to get a basic hi-fi setup for both work and home.
